Yahoo! Groups News: Increased File Size!

Just a heads up that the maximum file size that can be attached to a message has been increased from 1.5 megabytes to 15 megabytes.

Have a great weekend!

This is good news. The members of my group like to share photos and animations. They have a hard time keeping the message size under the limit.

    WHY??

Doesn’t Yahoo realize that there are MANY people still on dial-up, even still on ISP’s with limited inbox space, and even one 15-meg message will not only take over an hour to download (On a *good* day!) but will immediately put the subscriber in Bounce status? I have so many users on dial-up (myself included) that on all my lists that do allow HTML/Rich text we have a rule that no stationary file can exceed 250k in size, and if a file is 1 meg or above to put it in the File section so everyone can have access to it, not just the people on Individual messages.

Please, don’t do this! If you want to increase file allowances, let it be in the File section, not in messages themselves.

I am hoping this problem will be resolved SOON but apparently people cannot log in and the login page just keeps refreshing!! How long till this is repaired!

Does anybody else find it ironic that one can send a larger file to the list, than can be uploaded to the file area of the list?

I’d much rather spend time deleting “obsolete” files, than dealing with complaints by list members, that their e-mail account has been rendered non-functional, because of the size, and number of attachments that are sent.

I think this is fantastic news. Groups can make their own rules on how many MB’s can be attached to their sends. Dialup users also have to consider that us High Speed Internet connections have paid to have this type of convience, times are changing and growing.

This is good news as a couple of groups where I am a member, regularly use photo download sites that require tedious and unworkable log in systems, this latest modification might encourage them to send them direct to the group.

I would prefer that moderators use the groups files area to send files, but with the return of the attachment storage function,at least I will see the attachment, instead of the attachment not stored message.

How can I duplicate a database? I’ve tried “saving as” using a different name and copy and paste in the Handbase folder then changing the name of the copy, all to no avail. I suppose handbase must use some type of serial number to identify databases and not the name?

Just curious - why 15 MB? I thought that free email (yahoo, hotmail etc) could only send 10 MB.

Chichigirl - being a little arrogant there? Dialup people are paying for their service too. Just because you can afford broadband doesn’t mean everyone can. There are less and less dialup people these days as broadband gets cheaper, but that still does not mean that you have to demand something at the expense of someone else.

I think that in addition to putting the number of messages on that grid on the home page, perhaps if yahoo groups puts an average message size, it might help those on dialup to choose the right list for them.

I feel so blessed to have found this site.
A sister from an old church recommended it to me.
I feel like it will help me big time on a book I am trying to write in four years.
    So, thanks.

This is bad news. Many groups totally ban attachments. One group that I am a member of used to allow attachments but has switched to no attachments due to the new enormous size allowed.

The ability to add attachments is convenient but large attachments cause problems for some people, and attachments are not available for web only and digest group members.

If you ask me, the best solution to this problem requires Yahoo to fix it.

All attachments should be stored so people with web only and digest settings can download a copy of the attachments. The messages on the web site and in the digest should contain a link to the attachment

User accounts should have a setting so users can choose if they want to receive attachments and up to what size. If the attachment exceeds the maximum size they want to receive, the attachment should be stripped and replaced with a link to the attachment.

Please Yahoo, step up to the plate and fix this.

The above recommendation is an excellent solution which gives users a way to set it up that works for their individual needs and capabilities of their computer while not forcing others to do it their way.

Places have 15 mb’s or more available so it’s only logical that it be cranked up a notch or two. Thanks Yahoo for the upgrade.

While I understand the issue some have with a larger attachment size, 1.5MB was just too small. We use PDF format for a lot of our groups attachments and it was sometimes a bit of a pain to try to keep a PDF under 1.5MB. A limit of 3MB would have been fine for our group but 15MB works too.

As a Yahoo Group owner/moderator (CrazyCardMakers), I don’t allow attachments, and we use the Photos and Files to share photos/information not included in posts.

As a user, affordability is not the only reason some people don’t have anything better than dial-up for internet access. In my case, living in a remote location means limited connectivity other than established phone lines.

Administrators should get a function to limit the size of attachments to a size chosen by them. 15 MB ist much too big and only fosters silly uses of email.

15MB file size is a great news (as Google Group did it). Let’s forget
the dial up connection, few percentages of people now s till using
this type of very classical technology, please move forward to the modern era of internet.

Thank you Yahoo Group so much for this offer : much more convenient and
more saving the bandwidth to the world (if everyone send large attachments
to many recipients in a big list of emails !)

Am I miss remembering this or did this feature get deleted?

At one time there was a facility to turn moderation on/off for a user. I just went to turn it on for a user who was abusing YAHOO and I could not find it. I had no other option other than to unsubscribe him. If I am mis-remembering this could we add this to the long list of features needed, please?

    Ed,
You can either change your posting options so that all messages are moderated, (Done under the Management menu > Messages > Postings & Archives (Edit) )

Or, you can unsubscribe him as you mentioned.
