Yahoo! Groups: How long does it really take?
Over the years we’ve seen a lot of speculation around how long it really takes for changes made to group settings to be reflected when users search and browse in the Groups directory. The truth is that some common changes have taken much longer than necessary to be reflected within the Groups directory.
Those days are gone! The Groups team made some backend changes to the Groups directory and as a result, the time it takes to see common changes within your group has been dramatically reduced.
It will now only take 2 to 24 hours for the common changes below to be reflected within the Groups directory:
- For a newly created group to appear within the Groups directory
- For a deleted group not to appear within the Groups directory
- For changes to the name of a group to be reflected within the Groups directory
- For changes to title or description of a group to be reflected within the Groups directory
- For changes to whether a group is listed or unlisted to be reflected within the Groups directory
- For changes to the category a group is listed in to be reflected within the Groups directory
- For changes to the group homepage photo to be reflected within the Groups directory
- For changes to options for making messages visible to public or private to be reflected within the Groups directory
…all within 2 to 24 hours of the change!

I have several groups that are NOT listed in the directory, but I receive emails constantly from people wanting to join them. How is this possible since they are unlisted?

Many of our e-group members complain that their e-mail commands sent for mail management take a long time to take effect and in many instances, they NEVER do. The moderators have had to manually go in and check the group activity screen to see which accounts have submitted changes and which have actually taken effect.
Any Ideas would be helpful.

Glad to see more work done, and thanks and all, but I would prefer that other, more desirable changes be moved to the head of the line. There’s tons of things people ask for all the time on the suggestion boards, but none of it ever gets developed. Improvements in the directory itself are long overdue, including adding categories, and a better way to navigate the directory, perhaps a more visual, flash based expansion of menus to allow us to explore the tunneling down of several categories simultaneously, rather than multiple page loads? Minor changes are great, and I know Yahoo is having tough times right now, but it sure would be nice to see the things that matter to us addressed. Otherwise, why ask us? Maybe you are getting requests I never see, but when I see tons of idea son the suggestion page seemingly overlooked, I get disappointed. Perhaps if we could see a list of what you are working on it would give us a better idea of what direction you are headed.

What about member changes? Many times members will go in to change their email settings from say Individual Email to Daily Digest and it takes forever for the change to be made. Even unsubbing from the group can take a very long time. Are there any plans in the future to shorten this wait?

The title of the blog got me so excited until I read the contents… One thing that bugs me is when I go on vacation. I change my email deliver to nomail or digest for a lot of groups, and resume email when I return. THOSE changes seem to take a few days to take effect. Yet I don’t see that being listed as a change as part of this update. Did it change, or will it still take a few days?

I am the moderator of an active Gore_Vidal group. Recently, there has been some personal attacking going back and forth. Can any of you help me to allow the two main attackors to save face? I don’t know what to say, but I must because I believe in the 1st Amendment, continue to allow it.
What will satisfy the ego of the primary attackor who has been roundly ‘defeated’ in her ignorant opinions but continues to put-down the others? It is obvious that she is embarrassed and trying to save face. I want to help her do that.

There is a lot to learn about not only Moderators role, but also the basics. It is a good idea if Yahoo starts a free e-school to start with for Moderators. I am sure, many issues come up during this exchange and discussion and Yahoo also benefits a lot out of this exercise.

My concern is the group listing.When will a semblance of order be restored to group listings.Right now,the list changes everytime you refresh the page.I’ve grown accustomed to looking for groups that are ranked by membership.I keep track of the popular groups.

Thats cool but I see a problem the group member order is a mess it lists a group with 131 Members higher then a group that has 233 Members.What are they gonna change order every time? I don’t like that it throws off group order.

Sometimes I find the directory to be flakey. For example, a group that came up in a search of the directory on one day doesn’t come up at all on another. This seems to be true even now, after all these changes have been implemented. For example, the newly formed exercise group I made earlier in the week listed perfectly in the directory on the same day that I made it, but now you can’t find it at all using any of the words in the description. (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/wiifitgirlfriends/ for those who are curious.)
This makes it nearly impossible for new groups to get going.

Hello, I have not seen the changes I made to my membership take effect ever. When I first joined Fairfield Freecycle I was receiving every single message that came in to my gmail account, so I went in & changed it to WEB ONLY and to send the messages to my yahoo account, and this still has yet to happen!!!!!!! I go in there every few days & it still says those setting in my membership info page, but I press on them again & say save settings every time to try to get it to recognize them because they have yet to take effect!! I am now going to try to drop out of the membership completely & re-join to see if then it will finally stop sending me the messages…can you please fix this glitch?@#$!!! From what I hear a lot of us have problems with it….

I still don’t like how out of whack the group order is why don’t you keep the groups in order and just show the changes like new group description,or there new picture .The ppl in my group have commented on how hard it is to find there groups.Please take this under consideration.

Jami,I think I was a little early complaining about this change.My group was on the “first page” before and I wasn’t getting that many members to join,Now with this change I have noticed a 10% improvement of members joining.So I’m happy with the change.

I noticed the failure to sort browse results by group size at about the same time. In fact, Yahoo is somehow displaying the groups in apparently random order, because page refreshes will change the order.
I believe the time I noticed this was shortly after someone at Yahoo inadvertently hosed the “sort” code for browsing groups by category in the directory. Perhaps it happened in connection with the upgrade to speed up how long it takes for changes to be reflected. I don’t believe it was intentional, because it really makes no sense.
Please get someone to repair the sort code to sort listings in descending order by number of members once again.

I’ve been trying to join a yahoo group called cthomeschoolingourspecialkids for a really long time now. I filled out the necessary information last year and I’m still waiting. I tried again about 4 days ago and I’m still waiting. The waiting time states 2 to 24 hours. What’s up or what else can I do? Thanks for your time.

Jami, I am wondering have you even read any of these? I have yet to see a reply to even just one since you posted your topic June 18. As many have said for some reason the old way things was set up, where groups was ranked by how many members was in the group is no more. Now instead the listing of groups is way wacked out and changes all the time. First it went bad by ever time you refreshed the list would changed. Now it seems it dont change that much just daily. My group is called SINGLE PARENTS 2008 It for the longest time was ranked number one with the most members. Then since this messed up it was bouncing in the top 4. Now it has went from that to 9th. The top groups are now groups that have a hell of alot less members and are like ghost groups, meaning groups with very low if no activity in them. WHat the heck. When people searched for groups in our topic they could easily find us cause we be right there up front but when you push us down the page to who knows soon to the next page many people wont find out group. When me and my moderators put alot of tiem and effeort to make out group for all to just have our group put in the back burner it is wrong.
In the Catagory of Single Parents we have not just the most members, but we have the highest activity for any single parent groups as well we have the most resorces for any single parent let alone parent group. We strive to be the best we can and being number one felt like a reward for all we have done.
Now you are destroying all we have strived to be by having a very messy catagory of groups that are ranked top when they dont even post let alone have many members.
Please fix this.
Hmmm again wonder if anyone even reads this. I have found yahoo sucks when it comes to communication back to its customers, well what do we expect we dont have to pay for yahoo…… well yet .
