I participate in many blogs, and make comments. So I am not sure how I got on this list. Altho I’d like to participate, but how? And are you sure you want me? I mean, I’m not a blog list manager. Altho I do manage several other accounts that are fairly quiet..and don’t need my efforts… they just exist… so to speak… as step children of my own imagination.

Even though I live very close to Dallas and really would like to participate, the location would determine if I would attend. No matter where it will be (in Dallas), I would have to leave home a few hours early just to beat the extreme Dallas traffic at that time of day.
Please, please post where the Town Hall Meeting will be held.

Hello everyone,

If you are interested in attending, please submit your group details as indicated within the blog post above and we’ll get back to regarding availability.
Also as mentioned above, if you aren’t located in Texas please submit your details as indicated and we’ll keep you posted on further event locations.

Won’t be able to attend sorry. Just a little too far (Australia). But, if you’re talking to the Yahoo Groups team … My most onerous moderator activity is banning new spam members and deleting their postings as spam. Currently, this involves editing the membership, then banning the member, then confirming the banning, then going back to the pending mail, then deleting it as spam. A single button that did all this in one action (with a single confirmation presumably) would make me very happy. Regards, Dave

I live in Dallas and intend to go to the meeting on March 4th, but I don’t see where it says a specific address and or a building name.
If the specific building has not been picked (because you don’t know how many people are comming) I have contacts in the local Chamber of Commerce and can provide local knowledge.
Bernie said,

I, too, am disappointed that the event is scheduled on the day of the Texas primary, a primary which has taken on major importance. Even though the event is scheduled for a secret location in Irving, I’d register if were not the evening of the primary AND of precinct caucuses. But on that date I won’t register.
Although you may get decent attendance, that date automatically eliminates a lot of interested, and interesting, moderators. Shucks.

When scheduling this event, we were not aware of the conflict with the Texas primaries. Due to this conflict we have moved the date of our event to Wednesday, March 5th. I hope that those of you who weren’t going to be able to attend will reconsider.
Bob - if you look a few comments up, I mention that the event will take place at a hotel in Irving…between the airport and downtown Dallas. More specifics on agenda, exact location, and registration information will be sent to those who submit their information as indicated in the post above.
Thanks for the heads up on the conflict - I look forward to meeting you Dallas moderators!

Unfortunately having it on a Wednesday night in a big city means that the drivetime will rule out a lot of people - myself included. I can’t be just getting home at 11 on weeknight since I work. If you ever consider hosting one of these on a weekend, I’d definitely be more interested.

What is all of this crying that Irving is too far of a drive for DFW people? Are you kidding me? Irving is right smack dab in the center of the metro area. Its the ideal location for a conference in that area. I am just glad this thing is coming somewhere within a 1000 miles of me.
I just registered for it and I am driving from Oklahoma City (200 miles) for this (if they allow me to attend, they might not since they know I’ll be full of constructive criticism on the spam issue). Whats even better is the fact that it is close to Grand Prairie, so I can stop by the race track (Lone Star Park) all in one trip. It doesn’t get any better than that. There is so much to do in the DFW area, people should consider making a day out of it and do something fun.
I swear, people are in Texas share something in common with those in Tennessee: they don’t venture more than 10 miles in any direction from home, except when on vacation.

Jami,
I just submitted my info, but I did not get any confirmation or anything. Then I saw your comment further down, where you say “If you’re not in Texas…” does this mean that since I put down Oklahoma mine wont even be considered and instead filed away for when you all finally make it up here?

Why do you have to commit to have email and\or phone contact by both yahoo and its vendors before you can even sign up for the Town Hall Meeting?
I want to attend the meeting but only allow Yahoo to contact me about this event only. Not YOUR VENDORS! that I do not know or to be bombarded with all other events that Yahoo plans that may or may not be of interest to me.
My preception tells me that this planned meeting will not be a geniune as I would like to perceive it to me.

Irving… during evening drive times. Uh uh.
The Mandalay is indeed nice, but trying to get into Irving from Dallas at that time of the evening is tough since traffic goes that way, not the other way. Have to flight all the DFW airport traffic as well.
Also, this is the buckle of the Bible belt… lots o’folks attend church on Wednesday nights, particularly during Lent.
Suggest a rescheduling where drive times and other regional conflicts are not so prevalent, or have two meetings - one in Ft. Worth and one IN Dallas proper.

Would love to attend the next one you have in Houston. Please email me with the details if you head down from the Dallas area to our side of the state. After all, we are the 4th largest city in the nation and I’m sure the turnout would be worth the trip. If this event had been on a Saturday, it would have been worth the drive. As it is, I’ll have to be patient and wait for you to come here instead. I hope the meeting goes very well.

I, too, will be participating in the Texas Primary convention (the only way you can vote for the president if you think about it — as delegates to party conventions select their nominees and electors). So I won’t be able to go.

Keith said,
February 22, 2008 @ 1:22 pm
Well, the real stuff doesn’t get underway until 7 PM. 6-7PM is just a meet and greet, so you could probably be late to that and still be safe. Hopefully someone from Yahoo will come on and say something about that notion.
@ Andy - Good to see someone else understands how the system really works. The “people” don’t “elect” the president, at least not under the current system. And who the president is really dosen’t matter that much. Most of the spending, scamming and crooked dealings are done on the local and state level (and no one pays attention to local politics) and some in the Congress as well, but the president is really just a mouthpiece for various committees, regulatory bodies and the Congress. That is to say, the president has no power, he is just the guy who gets up and talks about it.
Though, myself, I am in favor of eliminating primary elections altogether and letting the parties select a single candidate to put forth based on rules that each party establishes. Having 50 states who all have their own little rules about how and when primaries are run (some states have theirs early, most on Super Tuesday, some later (Texas) and some states have open primaries while others are closed, etc, etc.) is bull. Elections for federal offices should be governed solely by federal rules. One office, one election, one set of rules.

I am the moderator/owner of 7 groups with hundreds of members. I appreciate Yahoo’s efforts to have a Town Hall Meeting - what a great idea. Irving is the perfect location. Right bewteen Dallas and Fort Worth and close to DFW Airport. Thanks, Yahoo. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend. I am the Associate Pastor of Music at a church and as mentioned in a comment above, Wednesdays are busy nights at church, especially getting ready for Easter!

Terry_TX said,
February 25, 2008 @ 8:05 am
As previously mentioned by several people, a Wednesday evening is definitely not an ideal choice:
1. it’s church night for many people
2. those who are involved with the elections will be trying to recover from a very late night the previous evening
3. for some of us it’s a 25-mile one-way trip dab smack in the middle of rush hour, which means a 90-minute drive if you’re lucky (arriving at 6:30 PM if you can leave right at 5 PM)
4. some of us (yeah, that’s me) have night vision problems and prefer to avoid unknown routes at night, so a daytime meeting would be best, which means on the weekend (but avoid conflicts with church on Sunday)
All that being said, I’d love to attend, as it’s next to impossible to contact anyone from Yahoo! when having spam problems in the groups. One thing of major concern right now is that some group members are feeding groups posts of private groups to their blogs, apparently via Google widgets…

“some group members are feeding groups posts of private groups to their blogs, apparently via Google widgets”
Errr… I meant to say that the posts from groups that have private, members-only archives are being posted to blogs belonging to a member of the group, who has NOT asked for permission to do this.
They’re not simply quoting some info in a post, they’re having the entire post (including the person’s unmasked email address) re-posted to their blog. In many cases, the entire thread is being automatically fed to their blog (this is evident from the lack of judicious pruning - everything is getting posted).

Hello everyone! I think that this Moderator Town Hall meeting is a good idea however, I would like to suggest to the organizers that it may be more efficient and practical to conduct a town hall meeting such as this online. As you know, many of our moderator business is conducted online thus it would just make better sense to do it online. Many of us are quite busy and adding travel time, paying for gasoline, and all that comes with it is just more cumbersome. Also, I think that there would be a lot more participation with an online town hall meeting. Please consider my thoughts and suggestions and I will certainly attend and participate; and I think many other will too. Sincerely, Eli

As a new moderator starting a new group when I first heard of this townhall. I was excited and entergetic about the idea of going and being able to “pick” the brains of others but in reading the various post the proverbial wind has left the sails of the ship of enthusiasm. I’ve never heard such negative rhetoric about something that is suppose to be positive. All I saw was excuses, which are the tools of the weak and the incompetent which build monuments of nothingness. How do you expect groups to be positive when the moderators themselves come off so negative.

How frustrating to be ‘invited’ to something late and after event registration closes - via an email that forces one to search for the registration link that is now inoperable.

Add my name to any list that would prefer an online meeting, or at least a weekend one. I live on the far west side of Ft Worth, work til 5:30, and just getting thru downtown FtWorth can take 30 min during drive-time. Hotel in Irving near DFW would be nearly impossible. So I won’t attend - and since both my co-moderators are active in church, and one’s a nurse on call, we’ll all miss it. Too bad, I’ve read interesting things about the other meetings.
Keith said,

@ CW - I have been accused of that more than once in my existence. Electronic communications are impersonal, sometimes people come off extremely cold when thats not what was intended. I do agree there was alot of “whining” about the choice of the date, I said so right up at the top. I have always believed that people who really want things make the sacrifices needed to obtain them. You sound like a positive person, you should come if for no other purpose than to help counter some of the negative vibes that are always going to be present when you put a bunch of folks together in a room with each other. Positivity, like intellect and enlightenment, is contagious you know. Hope to see you there.
@ Jami - Thanks for putting this together. I was really pleased to see that you all decided to start having these. Just like when political candidates put these together, even if they take a beating by the attendees, the greater good usually benefits from the end result and puts the engineering teams more in touch with the users. The end result is a better product.

We would like to attend, please contact me by email with the information. My husband and I have a group together, “Makeitwork”.

Is there a way to unsubscribe from messages from this blog? I don’t remember opting in to receiving them, and I can’t find any way to opt out.
I find it really irritating that whenever I access the groups I moderate, I’m now presented with a gigantic intrusive message : “Are you a Group Moderator in the Dallas area? If so, click the link below to learn about a special Groups Moderator Town Hall event on March 5th.”
Come on, what percentage of moderators live in Dallas? I live in Europe so this could hardly be less relevant to me. But even if you were meeting in London, I probably wouldn’t have time to come to a meeting about Yahoo! Groups. The most I’d be able to do is fill in an online questionnaire.
So while I don’t want to give you a hard time, and I appreciate the value of this online community greatly, I also *really* don’t want to be presented with irrelevant and intrusive messages. Please rethink the way you’re doing this.

My cousin lives in a suburb of Dallas and may attend if we knew exactly were it’s at. I noticed that is the big argument on here is that no one knows where it is. I don’t understand why Yahoo wouldn’t list it unless they know for sure who is going and then send the info. Does anyone know about the Yahoo group conference coming up next month in CA.? Let me know if you hear anything. Thanks, Angel

As group founder/owner I would like to be there, sadly I live in Holland. We are far behind other countries and we still cannot get an @yahoo.nl account, grrrrrrrrrrr.
Have a great day in Dallas!

Victoria Dijkstra

I signed up for this when it was originally scheduled on March 4 (election day). Not knowing for sure if I needed to register again for the March 5 meeting, I clicked the link, and got a Contact Intelligence banner with the message
The survey you are attempting to answer does not exist.
Below it. Hmmmm

I would like to see a numerical record of a rating by a reader, for each message, but only one rating per reader, and the average of all readers after the reader’s rating is entered. Something like Answers has already.
Numerical Ratings from 0 to 9 would be fine.
