Would you prefer to have Groups communications delivered right to your email? If so, you should consider joining the Moderator Central Group.

Moderator Central is a valuable resource for moderators for several reasons:

  • The Groups team uses this group to send out official communications, like heads up on scheduled maintenance and downtime, periodic Groups Weather Reports (which summarizes the latest news on known issues that may be affecting users), tips & tricks for new and advanced moderators, and feature stories (essentially the same communications that you can find here on the Groups blog, only delivered right to your email).
  • Moderators can connect with one another on the group’s Message Boards to ask questions and share advice.
  • Moderators can find a plethora of resources developed by the Groups team.
  • Moderators can submit their product suggestions.

Please note that Moderator Central is an announcement only group for the Groups team to use to send official communications to moderators which means that subscribers can’t post messages, but you can always leave comments for us here on the blog.

We want to hear from YOU!

I’d like to hear from moderators what additional resources you’d like to see on Moderator Central to make it more valuable.

Additionally, I’d like to add a new “Tip of the Week” module – with tips that come from our community of expert moderators.

Submit your suggestions for improvements to Moderator Central as well as the valuable tips you’d like to impart by commenting below.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

    1) remove bogus posts sooner- or consider moderating the posts.
    2) add thumbs up or down to be seen by users than stars.
3)consider offering some sort of sign for those who offer reliable answers so users can easily know which are real answers.
    4) have more defined bold text expectations of rules and what is allowed to be posted, and what Mod Central is for.
    5) more official yahoo employee’s posting so users can actually see and read involvement on the products they offer, than just moderators. or at least specify this is only a moderator active forum
    6) hire someone who will provide these answers and involvement more so than just moderators so users will feel Yahoo is really there for them.

Yahoo is a great product for many, but when Yahoo fails to respond, users feel betrayed, left in the dark and feel responsibility to their group members to offer them answers that aren’t often given. Yhaoo can really stand out beyond other providers by offering a little more customer care to non paying members :)
over all, yahoo is great, and Mod Central was one great idea!

Personally I do know that I have struggled with navigating my way around.
Having a step by step guide to new moderators will be a useful resource.

I am still unsure of how to drive traffic to my group and get my blog off the ground.

Some help and advice will be useful.

Many thanks and hope this New Year marks a progression and less frustration.

Currently, the choices for message delivery are:
    Individual Email
    Daily Digest
    Special Notices
    Web Only

Some of our members, because of the description given by Yahoo, think that if they choose Special Notices they will not be able to read the messages from the web. The descriptions are:

    Special Notices:
“Receive only important email notices from the group moderator.”
There is nothing stated that you can also read the messages from the web, giving many the impression that it is not possible.

Contrast that description with the one for Web Only:
“Don’t get notified of the latest happenings. Read messages only on the web.”

I suggest that the description for Special Notices state that you can also read the messages from the web - maybe something on the line of:
“Read messages on the web, and receive only important email notices from the group Moderator.”

I think it would be great if yahoo would allow us to edit the meaasges after they have allready been aproved.. lots of times if members are not on moderation a message will have some errors in it of one kind or another and there’s no way to fix them without just deleting them and then they’re gone & you have to have the member repost & that’s a pain.

Does anyone have any other suggestions??

Not to mention the times we hit send by mistake.. lol.

I am upset about the way that Yahoo! Groups breaks up URL’s when they are sent on to the members of my groups. Most people in the groups are unsophisticated and don’t realize that the extra space was added to the address. This means adding wording to the effect on how they can paste the link into the browser then hitting enter or return. Makes it harder to get information out to people than it was before.

allow a symbol next to the moderators who are willing accept IM’s to help others, other than simply being lit up. many people do IM to other’s, but many more would be less hesitant if there was a symbol stating it was welcomed. much easier than searching threads, to IM to a willing mod.

For out posted emails you have omitted the pictures that people send to our groups. You just supply a link to the pictures. Could we at least have a thumbnail included in these post? I want to first peek for safety’s sake at what I am fixing to go view.

Also in the library section we need a thumbnail view for this area as well, and the full name and full file type, plus description included. You can never be too careful when opening files. It would also be great if we could tic off a list of files that our group will accept, and or a list of files we wont accept, and whom tried to upload what etc to the group.

We need lots of protection in these areas. I can’t help but to think of the havoc someone could do to our groups, if we did not have good safeguards in place. So the moderators need to know as much as possible ahead of time.

    Thanks guys and gals!

There needs to be an elimanation of many of the groups. Either their owner’s are not avalable anymore or abandon by the owner. This is making the search for active sites, especially for new people, difficult. Our sites can be overlooked because of the amount of inactive unused sites that are still listed.

    1. Make it possible for moderators to approve files being uploaded by members.

    2. Provide a Search for photo albums. In several of my art groups members upload a great many new photos within a day or two. The “New Photos” choice is useless for finding them easily even when we use the “list” option.

    3. Bring back the Chat feature within the Group.

when someone posts a link and the entry on mygroups says one new link, I’d like to be able to click on it to see what got posted to prevent spam, I have a very extensive links section with over a dozen folders and many subfolders.

I REALLY would like a simplier way to unmoderate, like an email command, when I get an email notice to approve a message, wish there was a link to automatically make that member status same as group status. now it requires at least six page views with clicks in different places. so it rarely gets done.

let us see IP’s of subscription requests, I get a series of ‘hi’ or ‘rrrrrrrr’ and if I could see the IP then I’d know it was the same spammer address harvester sending in a more wordy intro later.

My Tip of the Week suggestion:

Learn where everything is on the member’s Groups page. Many of the questions members email to me personally relate to ‘how do I…’ issues dealing with their membership. By learning how the Groups page is put together and where everything is I can direct them to the place they want without having to search for it - saving me time and making me seem an expert not only about Yahoo! but, by association, about the group’s area of interest.

I would like the yahoo groups to have a folder system for messages similiar the those in other web forums like invision free & vbullitin.

It would seriously help in the sorting & archiving of old posts & materials. Plus it would allow the members to view threads that interest or concerns them (not everything posted in the group maybe relevent to all members see), thus saving precious time for all.

I’d like to see some realistic responses from Yahoo Customer Service when we file an abuse complaint about groups where the owner/moderator is MIA, and the group is troll infested with members using the most vile racist terms, threats, personal attacks, etc. All that seems to happen is a response from Yahoo instructing us to complain to the group owner, with the same response over and over and over, despite telling Yahoo that there is no owner. How can we complain to someone who does not exist? Yahoo used to take action in these situations, but it seems like no one in Customer Service cares any more.

Some of these suggestions I just read are truly bizarre and I hope you ignore most of them.

Here are a couple of things that would help me.

Let me organize the members in order by how they are subscribed.
    1) I want to be able to find people subscribed for “no email” quickly.

    2) There should be some indicator or text generated so that people
will know they just received a “Special Notice” or some other way
to identify it otherthan me typing in “Special Notice” every time.

2A) Moderators should be able to respond/reply to a previous
message by making it a Special Notice especially if the original
    message was a “Special Notice”.

    3) I’d also like to be able to remove a yahoo email address
from the profile if the Yahoo email address does not exist.
We should not be automaticly creating yahoo emal address
when people create profiles when they have no intention of
    using them.

I could give you about 20 more things like this.

I also forgot to say that there should be a switch so that owner
and or moderator accounts that do not want to receive messages
sent to the owner account will not receive them.

If you have 9 moderators for a group and someone sends
a message to the “group owner”, all 9 people will receive the
message. And there is no way to turn that off.

    ———–

Also if someone is not a moderator, I should be able to toggle
a switch and make their message a special Annnoucement
    before I approve their message.

    —–

I know how to circumvent the problem with long links
being truncated by soft returns if you email me at
    ccdogpark@ yahoo.com

But it only works for people that are being moderated.

The one thing I would like to allow owners/moderators to select what mail delivery options users have avalable. I’d like to eliminate users from using the “Web only” function…. You get a lot of members that just go away and have invalid email addresses, clogging the userbase. Also ways to ping for valid addresses.

Also… stay away from all the flash and intensive graphics….. I already eliminated my yahoo home page, since it is too resource intensive….

The move to more “flair” is senseless… make a site functional… not flashy… Keept it attractive, but don’t overdo it.

I wish there was a way to get help when something out of the ordinary happens that is a problem.

I had a volunteer help me set up my list for about 5 minutes and after 2 years of working it alone and building it up to a large solid list, this volunteer deleted me from my own list.

I have been struggling for 7 mths. to recreate the list, which was very hard, as she denied me access to the old list entirely. The old members often are looking for me and don’t know how to find me. Despite all this, my new list is larger now than the one she stole from me, but we are still missing about 400 members that we cannot reach.

I have never been able to reach a person at Yahoo to help me straighten this out.

One thing I’ve done to build membership for my groups (which are local) is to print free business cards from VistaPrint. They list the name of the group, how to subscribe, and a brief description of the group. That way I can tell people about the group easily, while not giving them my personal card. I give cards to local businesses and agencies to hand out to people who may be interested.

Admittedly the cards are not my main way of building membership, but they do help.

I’ve no idea if this is the place to post this but I hope someone can help.

I run several health groups involving diseased genitals with a condition that affects children, men and women…(lichen sclerosis, BXO, or vulvodynia) and it’s extremely painful so that having intercourse is almost unbearable.

And so what does Yahoo do? They decided to put us into an adult X rated category…(because of the taboo of genitals? when it’s purely a health condition) *sigh* and now we’ve got those ridiculous, more than insulting pornographic ads of all things. When these are people who can barely engage in intercourse. Talk about being insensitive and what an insult.

I have tried and tried to get those rotten ads taken off or us put into a normal classification all to no avail. HELP please? My members are quite upset about it. Thanks Dee T

Hi, my group has two moderators who need to send netiquette reminders to newer members who post in an inappropriate manner. It would be awesome if the post reply function featured a cc field so that my other moderator would be able to see that I already responded to the offending post. When I want to show her that I’ve done that (and frankly, my ambition to do that is lessened by the extra steps involved) I have to go back and forth between two tabs: one with the list and one with my email opened.

A second great improvement would be notification to members who’s posts are being automatically forwarded to someone’s inbox. That’s a creepy feature and I would want to know if someone was doing that with mine.

Thirdly, is there a way of customizing one’s list of posts to forgo those of members I have decided are idiots? Right now, I’m the moderator so I have to torture myself by reading them. But I won’t always be the moderator and I would love to have my list messages be just the posts that are helpful.

    Thanks!

Hi Jami just as you say “We want to hear from YOU!” so do we.

We want to hear from YOU! in a 2 way exchange either
on the open message board or privately.

I would like for Customer Care to communicate directly with us.

Get rid of the auto responses, when reporting abuses and bugs
they invariably do not provide the solution to particular problems
,and are usually way off the mark.

Provide a spam central, where persistent spammers addresses are added,
so that Customer Care can take action on them and so that moderators
    can bulk ban the addresses.

Update us on what happens when we click the delete as spam button.
Does the address go somewhere to be processed by customer care
or is it just a feel good measure, making us think we took action against the spammer?

convert the delete as spam button to ban member and delete as spam.

provided unlimitted capacity to ban members.

Improve the email delivery of new message notifications, to be more like
    Yahoo Group emails

I have a group for seniors and I think many get frustrated with the size of the directory. If there was a “drop box” for those looking for groups, accessible by moderators only to avoid spam we could match up better I think.

Again I request that the email asking if a message can be posted have more than “approve” and “reject” options. My groups have “new member moderation” to keep out spammers. If someone’s first message is obviously on topic, I want an option in the email from Yahoo to remove that member’s moderated status. Otherwise, I have to go into the control panel and do it manually.

And, yes, Renee is absolutely right about being able to bring up the “no mail” hit and run spammers so they can be removed from the list.

    Hi Jami

A minor suggestion, but one that affects me and maybe many others.

Could you select a different font for the newsletter, that is, one which is bolder without being listed as a bold font? The current one is good, but thin. I’m probably just as guilty of using a “thin” font, but I don’t have to read it LOL.

I run a yahoo group for a food buying club and we put all of our food delivery and pickup schedules into the group calendar. All of the pickup times repeat on either a weekly, bi-weekly, 4-week, 8-week, or 12-week cycle. At the current time the longest period of time I can have an item repeat in the calendar is every 4 weeks. I would like to have the added feature of repeating every 6-weeks, 8-weeks, and 12-weeks.

I would appreciate it if the out-going communication from yahoo were more forthcoming about problems that are affecting the groups. A week or two ago I was affected (both as an applicant and as an approver) by the fact that on-application file and APPROVE messages weren’t going out when people applied to join a list. If it hit me multiple times over several days, yahoo has got to know about it. But there was no peep on the blog. I would like to have a *reliable* way of checking out problems that are happening or that have recently been resolved.

I’d like to see some boilerplate text files that I could use to rapidly set up my groups and get them off the ground. I’d like to upload these to the files section and have them emailed when a new member joins, and monthly or bimonthly to all members as reminders.

    1. How to manage your membership, use the group functions (photos, files, links, polls), and how to reply to the group or individuals emails as you intended, e.g. not to the group if you mean to reply privately. (Yes members can find this in the help IF they go search for it; most won’t go search they’ll just unsubscribe.)

    2. How to introduce yourself to the group to build familiarity.

    3. Generic rules of conduct: no flaming, no spamming, don’t quote an entire daily digest in your reply, etc. etc.

    4. How to help promote the group online and offline.

Then for the people who may help me moderate, I’d like in a text file

    5. the tips/cheat sheet ready to mail them about what they need to know.

Maybe it’s already there, and I’m not finding it because the navigation is difficult on the Moderator Central site.

More ideas for building membership would be good too.

Would like to see a link to tech support at Yahoo. As moderator of a yahoo group with about 3200 members, we have been having a problem for over 3 months with our mail management commands when sent from a subsribers e-mail program. They just stopped working. Most of our members do NOT access the web site but receive their mail directly into their inboxes. Countless e-mails to tech support simply result in a “we will look into it” response and nothing further.

I moderate a bunch of groups. Everyone is comfortable with the idea of ads in the emails but many are aggravated by their placement on the side. The problem is that these sometimes obscure the body images/text which can be very aggravating. Many are asking for options other than yahoogroups as a result.

I started a group for moderators of weather groups,so that we could give each other a heads up when there is an issue.

I’m curious as to why some messages in Yahoo groups come out with distorted letter (as per below- the original message) many of the letters arrive with funky looking symbols; making the original post pretty much unreadable.

Another/Other thing(s) that’s bugged me a long time; is the ability for some members in groups to be able to report “alleged copyright abuses” and the groups get deleted; with the Group owner having no recourse to defend themselves and/or their group; YET; if there is a technical problem on Yahoo anywhere; Groups/Mail/other website locations; there are NO direct email links in “Contact Us,” or anywhere else on site. Only legit contact link I’ve found in the last 5 years is: “spoof@yahoo.com” for reporting bogus email using a Yahoo address. Seems to me like such a public company should have several email address’s so their customer’s/User’s could contact them…….

I’d like to hear from moderators what additional resources you’d like to see on Moderator Central to make it more valuable.

The ability to edit messages even after they have been approved would be nice, but wouldn’t it require a few minutes delay before posts went out to those receiving individual emails from the group?
A problem we have had in the past several times has been even if you delete a post as soon as it comes in, you cannot prevent it from going out to members who receive individual emails from the group. The same would apply to the ability to edit posts that do not require approval. Would a 5-minute delay be neccessary to edit posts or prevent deleted posts from going out to members?

I would like to a way to approve file uploads by members.

We have a large membership and limit the number of photos a member may upload. I would like to have the ability to block photo uploads by members (when members exceed their limit.)

I’d like to have one button to reset/send notice of bouncing to ALL bouncing group members at one time. Doing it one by one makes it difficult to impossible in even moderately sized groups.

I’d like to have a link to what HTML codes do and don’t work in groups. Many people like to spice up their groups a bit using code and photos, and members in various groups have figured out what works and what doesn’t, but it would be nice to have an official resource guide. For instance, can we put embedded objects like video or music links on our home pages? I’ve seen a couple of questions about people wanting music to start on their pages (which I believes is no longer possible?). Basically, I’d like to know what works and what doesn’t and why?

I’d like better help pages. Sometimes they’re clear and sometimes not.

PLEASE go back to the way you had the message section BEFORE all your changes when we could just click on next, next, next to get to the NEXT message. The way you have it set now one has to arrow BACK in order to get to the NEXT message. When you click on *NEXT discussion/topic* it just takes off on it’s own somewhere. I have *owned* Yahoo groups since back when they were Clubs and I still don’t understand where the *next discussion* click even takes you. It certainly isn’t to the NEXT message. What is so hard about hitting NEXT and expecting it to be the NEXT email in the group? None of us has time for all this back arrowing. I would have complained about this much sooner but I didn’t realize that this place existed. Good idea and thank you!

Many of the ideas here are good ones. Especially those that have asked for easier access to Yahoo techs when we experience problems or have questions.

Also will you ever have a CHAT area back again? Most of my *people* have to go to a Delphi group in order to chat about their disease. The chat area is very missed by many of us!

    Another thing,

Please put the message ID numbers BACK into the email of messages delivered to members via email. I”ve noticed that they are no longer there at the bottom like they were for YEARS, and when I look at an email message and want to reference it at our group, its harder to find. When the group post ID number was there, it was much easier to locate messages using email. ITs especially difficult when we can receive hundred’s of messages in a short time frame.

Another thing, because my group started as a club, I was never able to have Polls in my group. That seems dumb. All groups should have access to the same Yahoo resources.

Lastly, it was a disaster for our group to get rid of chat. I personally do NOT run messenger programs on my computer. I relied on the standalone chat interface. Please bring it back. Don’t force us to use a service (messenger) that we do NOT wish or trust to use.

In my digest messages from the group, I am seeing “strange” characters.

For example, the apostrophe is apparently replaced by an a with a caret, followed by a stylised uppercase curly E, followed by the TM superscript.
There appears to be a similar issue with open-close quotes.
I am wondering if this is a problem with my browser settings.

Can you perhaps give me an idea of what is going on?
I have included a sample of the text as I see it…but if the problem is local to me, then it may not be apparent in the sample.

I’d like to see Yahoo Groups have a filter that will scan each message before it comes to the group and automatically reject it and ban the member if it contains words like Viagra Megadik, Penis, etc. The moderator should be able to enter individual words or quoted phrases that can cause a message to be filtered.

Having been around Yahoo groups for more years than I like to remember, I am appauled at the control function some moderators seem to want. While I accept the need to moderate new members for a while and even put on moderation for a tearm, the member who appear to transgress, it seems a tad arrogant to vet and alter messages before sending.

May I just request that the list of group subscribed to is undated accuratly and the group messages are sent as prescribed. One member just recieve 2008 message from a group he though he had been baned from.

I think it should be allowed for group owners to put the group under moderation. My group was on moderation and it was looking fantastic and in order but I found out that freecycle groups can’t be put on complete moderation. Doing it that way is letting members go wild and posting incorrect posts, not adding if the item is an offer, wanted, ect…and I think it is very important if a member post an offer they should also include their location so others will know if what is being offered is close to them or to far away.

I would also think it should be ok for groups to have a database section to put NO-SHOWS in, this would definately put a stop to people saying they are picking up and item and not showing and no emails or calls saying they are unable to get the item.

I have read line after line about messaging. I wonder how many Group owners and, or moderators are having issues with their members and Captcha Codes. We have Group members left out because of sight problems and no longer can take part in our games due to not being able to see well enough to fill in silly codes. These codes have not kept the spam bots out of any lobby. I thought Americans with Disabilities Act applied to anything or anywhere for disabled no matter their disability. For these members to complain about their issues to Yahoo they have to fill in a Captcha Code before they can send it off. I have tried to bring this problem to the fore front to Yahoo. This is just another effort. Laci

    b) active members ID’s
    c) a configurable page where the moderator can manually enter a numeric
for no. of messages posted a member, in a defined time period say -
    quarter/6months/1yr. etc.
    d) it is an observation that members use different “avatars” i.e. duplicate &

For Moderator Central Forum! commonly asked questions should be the first page ya see when attempting to gain access to this forum. didn’t we go through that a while back? no one ever sees it where ever that thread went. when clicking to add a new topic- it should first direct the poster to that commonly asked questions page

  99. Sandy said,

    January 9, 2008 @ 1:13 am

the redirection should be used, which would help the spammers. the more they have to click, the bored’er they’ll become. a good warning prior to posting would work too, like those warning you’re entering adult area’s- how about a warning page to look for threads, and not post off topic spam? how about an agreement page prior to posting?? a redirection page prior to getting to the New Topic Page. I’d bet if they had to click Agree, one would think twice.

Yahoo users that post links in this PUBLIC forum that bring you to a direct nudity-photo site (exposing all body parts) should not only be banned, but have their account suspended. There simply should be better monitoring of what is allowed to be posted. Someone should be deleting the smut and trash off right away before young group members see it, but better yet, it should not be posted at all.

My group is a social group for baby boomers and it is an extension of my web site. The problems I have had since the beginning of this group is that there are topics that people rather skip and not read but there is not way to not read it since all of the message are showing up by date and time and not by topics. Is there a way that I can get the FRONT PAGE of the GROUP to show up by topic and the tread below it. For instance not everyone is interested in Politics and sometimes Politic is a polarized topic and it alienate the members according to party line. It can get nasty and then all H* breaks loose on the board, people are mad at each other and using foul language etc. We have had this happen and even I even think sometimes we have a wonderful time on the board and someone shows up as if to sabotage it.
Just an opinion. I am a members of other site and I wont mention a name but they are organize by topics and people can go to the BB# and only participate in the area where they want to participate without having to get agitated and irritated by having to read such messages (Politics, Religious etc)

Jeri Maier~ it’s off topic, but to answer your question each member while on the group site has a choice of reading by topic or individual posts- there is no default setting for this via a group owner. there is small text above the archives that say: (Group by Topic) or (List as Individual Messages) you’ll see the opposite of what you have set. this setting again, is each web users choice. your view of the home page may no be the same as another member’s, depending on what they chose as a viewing setting of posts on the group.

The most effective way I’ve found to keep spammers out of my groups is to require moderator approval for membership. Then, for each membership request I get, I send an e-mail to the person seeking membership. If I get a reasonable response back, I approve the membership by replying to the original “So-and-so wants to join your group …” message.

Because I moderate over 25 groups, with several thousand members and new people seeking membership all the time, I try to automate this as much as possible. I have a script which automatically sends the “Who are you?” message to each applicant.

However, there are a couple of problems:

    1) Yahoo! doesn’t always send me an e-mail when someone tries to join a group. Usually it does, but not always. So some applicants can fall through the cracks with this system.

    2) I’d like to automate this even more, so that when I get a reply back from an applicant, I can automatically reply to the originally notification mail (if I got one) to approve the membership. This also doesn’t always work. Lately, I’ve been replying to these notification messages, and still finding these members in the “Pending” list for approval.

So I guess my main comment is: Make it work consistently.

I saw the invitation to moderator central this morning on a group I am moderating. My first comment? YARK! I hope this is not how groups will look in the future. Please read some inspirational material at and go back to the drawing board. It is not because we have the bandwidth that it needs to be wasted.

The noise to signal ratio on moderator central is so high it hurts my eyes!

It took me longer than the average web user stays on a site on the first visit to find what I was looking for, namely where to give feedback.

IMO a blog page is not a place for a many2many discussion. Apology to all 110 people before me if I don’t read your comments, I don’t expect you to read mine either unless you have tons of time to waste or you are the owner of the blog who invited the comments.

Prior to this place I tried to click the “start new topic” link on the moderator central home page, which politely replied to me that the page is available to group moderators only. So I clicked on the “Re: Calling all moderators - we want to hear from YOU!” to be textually directed to this blog, among a lot of noise.

Ads would have been more useful noise than the noise I saw all along the way (at least they pay for the service).

Prior to that misadventure I went the usual way I would go about web based groups, and I clicked on the “Messages” link on top. This brought up a stylish pages but no link to post nor to reply to a message.

Worse on that page, while looking for that link, the noise to signal ratio was beyond bearable.

I found the neat customization thing. Could open and close faster IMO, but that’s a detail. Oh, neat, I can choose a layout. Simple, Summary, and a disabled option that looks even more blown out.

Simple? just a title and plenty of noise.

Summary? the content I need double the noise.

Would you mind offering a “simple summary”? no avatars. I’m married. I’m not in the market for f**kbook or other kinds of meat markets just because they are modern fashion. I’m not interested in how people look. I am interested in what they have to post and I want to focus on their *words*. I can go to flickr for their pictures and to youtube for their movies if that’s what I’d be interested in.

And since I am asking for features, would you mind not forcing me to select “traditional delivery” every time I subscribe to a group? of course 90% of users never change from the default setting, and this is how we get even more noise into the circuits. HTML belongs in the web-browser, not in email.

Oh, how good were the old days of the usenet!

Not that I am against rich media, I produce some of it myself. Look at what I did at Google last autumn - just add the following three lines to an HTML document.

    YL_key=”acceptable”;

    please activate JavaScript

apology for ranting throughout the feedback NOT.

Since we are into business we would like to request free ads for moderators with the capability for us to respond to the inquiries.

Another, please give us step by step lesson on how to make a website and how to go about the domain as well.

The above will be of great help for those into business cause placing ads nowadays is a financial burden for business enthisiast but a good info for those looking for hands-on training/seminars/workshops etc.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the welcome to Moderator Central, but I have to say the Moderator Central home page is totally confusing and off-putting, so many side bars and little windows and widgets and clickable gee-gaws it is hard to find the discussion topics, read answers, etc.

I have a few specific questions to ask, and I would happily save time & effort by reading through the FAQs if they were organized; or the topics under discussion if the questions and the answers were expanded and easy to read.

My own group page is ok but I would like to change a few setting so that when I arrive on the group discussion page all the messages are expanded. How do I do that?

I am set to receive digests, but haven’t gotten a single one yet. Is this because I am a moderator?

If you can’t answer these questions, who should I ask?

I have had a group for about a year now. I use Firefox mostly to read the messages. Why is it that all of a short length URL embedded in the message is truncated (half blue - half black type) and so the link does not link to the URL.

I noticed it very recently with links to Wikipedia. I was using links to that site before and they were all intact. Who changed that? Is it the Firefox people or Yahoo groups code?

I also noticed that Yahoo mail would not let me copy some text out of a message and into another message through the clipboard on the PC. What’s with that?

I can do it on my Mac, but no copy and paste a sentence or two between a received message and a new one on the XP and PC. Why?

    Thanks! Sharon

First I would like to know how I can ‘vote’ or reply/comment on other blog posts HERE.

Next what I would like to suggest is to have a SINGLE button to click after doing a Reply to a post (on site) at a group. Right now what comes up after doing a Reply is a Continue button which I have to click that takes me to the SAME post that I replied to where I then have to click Next to go to the next post to read. Why can’t I have an option to click a button - Post (reply) and go DIRECTLY to the NEXT post? It currently takes 3 clicks to do this and all the LAG TIME involved with getting to the next post. All this makes for EXTRA time spent at the group site and processing time for Yahoo.

Every time I try to post (I was having a problem with one member of one of my groups a while back), I get the screen that says I can’t post there, because only moderators are allowed to post there. So what am I doing wrong? I am a moderator, ten or twelve times over.

I’m not sure about anyone else to ask this of: one of my groups, TLC_HMC, has consistently had messages deleted, and no one ought to be able to do this- it’s something each poster could do with their own, but they aren’t. I’ve seen complaints of this by others for some time, but I’m out of patience waiting for it to stop. We only have 3 of 127 messages left!

    Any ideas??

I love having this resource out here for free… thank you Yahoo!

    Two things I would like…

First - a FAQ for moderators where we can search for answers to questions and then post for help. Maybe it is out there, but I have not found it in the several years I have been a moderator.

Second - a method of making the member signup either more difficult on Mondays? It seems on Monday and Tuesday I have almost quadruple the number of possible spammers trying to sign up for membership. Perhaps changing the number of letters a subscriber has to fill in from day to day or randomizing them.

I think the limit of adding ten subscribers per day (using the “add members” link) is ludicrous and too inflexible. What if I want to shift over an existing group without any intentions of being a spammer? Please reconsider this rule to make it easier for bonafide list-owners. FN

Have been on Yahoogroups since its Egroups days. I think Yahoo should be more respectful towards the copyright/copyleft of the various members participating in a group. Likewise, Yahoogroups needs to make it easier for a group to migrate away from Yahoogroups, if it so desires.

If I recall right, a list-owner has to resort to all kinds of workarounds to download the archives of a Yahoogroup.

Lastly, I think the terminology of “listowner” is archaiac and anachronistic for a product such as this, which, as we all know, are created more by collaboration than anything else. Why should we use a near-feudal designation to describe a product born out of Web 2.0 collaborative practices?

Just my two paisa (a fraction of a cent!) worth. FN

Right now the main thing I would like to see implemented is to allow Group Moderators be able to edit a user’s email address. This has got to be the biggest “problem” right now with our Groups message base. As most of my members as not computer savvy, once their email changes from whatever they signed up with, they stop getting the message posts. I manage to track down the “bouncing” email users and get a correct address but unless they’re willing to run through the Yahoo process to edit their profile (which most of them don’t even know they have) then my Group’s message traffic is pretty much useless.

Group moderators NEED the ability to manage their user’s email accounts!!

Many of my members are novice Internet users. They often complain of not being able to find the “Files” link. I have done all than I can to direct their attention.

    1) I would like to see the links on the left side of the screen to be changed to a bolder and darker color and to have a more contrasting background.
    2) Color schemes are nice, but I would like to modify more of the display content. I would like the links table to be n the right side of the screen.
    3) It would be nice to have a picture next to a member’s name.
    4) Amoung the Group Email Addresses, could a group moderator address be added to the list?
    5) I wouold like to see at the top of the screen- “To become a member of this group send an E-mail to…” The present location is over looked.
    6) We may soon need more server space.

    Keep p the good work.

I just tried to create a new group, and received an error message listing (code-9998). I presume this code refers to a certain type of problem, and that if I had access to the right link, I could find out what the problem was. That might help me determine if I just need to wait for Yahoo! to resolve it, or if I need to do something myself.

Could a link (or file describing the problem codes) be posted to Moderator Central?

    Thank you!

I am a member of a group where recently the Owner’s e-mail was canceled for reasons not made clear to her. The same thing happened with her only Mod: as a result, neither of them can work with the group, and it is effectively dead.

    1) What can be done to restore their access to the group, so they can get it running again?

    2) The Yahoo! groups community is littered with many other dead groups, either abandoned by owners or perhaps for technical issues like the above. Usually these groups become dumping grounds for spam, and little else. They clutter the search engine results as well as using up your server space. It would be a huge improvement if you could send e-mails to the assigned Owners & Mods of such groups, requesting some action or response, and if none was forthcoming in 30 days, eliminate the group.

    Thank you!

Yahoo’s policy on “mature content” appears to be an all-or-nothing approach at this time. If a site contains any material that is not “G” rated, they must either be registered under the “Adult” category, or they risk being banned.

Registering under the Adult category prevents these groups being found by searches, and surrounds them with distasteful ads for porn sites and similar offensive material. Surely Yahoo! can change their approach to this issue?

May I suggest that groups could be posted in any area, but declare their “rating” as per a standard similar to movies? I.e., group content might be rated “G,” “PG,” “R” or “X,” as determined by the owner. Yahoo! might continue to ban search access to “R” or “X” rated sites (or perhaps open search access to these for users who have paid for their Yahoo! accounts with a CC and registered their age as adult), but allow open searches on both “G” and “PG” rated materials. This would allow Owners to use the group sorts much more effectively, yet keep access safe.

    Thank you!
